Level 48-ID is the 49th level of Backrooms Indonesia. This level is an urban area covered in volcanic ash.
Description
Level 48-ID is an urban expanse of unknown dimensions. Most structures on this Level consist of shophouses and tenement blocks, which are typically locked. These buildings lack electricity, resulting in a total absence of internal lighting. The roads are paved, possessing sufficient width for at least two trucks to bypass one another. Street lamps are present but remain non-functional.
The most defining characteristic of this Level is the abundance of volcanic ash blanketing the entire area. All buildings and roads are perpetually covered in a 10 cm layer of ash. Should this ash be cleared or heaped, it will gradually replenish or recede until it returns to its baseline height of 10 cm. Visibility is restricted to a maximum of 5 meters. Survivors are strongly urged to carry personal light sources to signal their presence from a distance.
The sole source of illumination is a faint glow emanating from the sky, which is obscured by a dense volcanic haze. Additionally, the Level is subject to periodic volcanic ash storms, detailed below. Survivors are advised against prolonged outdoor exposure, even when equipped with respiratory protection. Excessive exposure to the ash leads to severe respiratory distress and is frequently fatal.
Vulcanic Storm
Every few days, local communities report the onset of high-velocity winds that sweep through the Level, carrying dense clouds of ash. This phenomenon typically persists for at least six hours. Survivors are required to seek shelter within buildings during these events; unlucky individuals are often discovered to have succumbed to asphyxiation.
Reportedly, a few minutes after a storm subsides, survivors may momentarily glimpse the silhouette of a massive, mountain-like structure in the far distance.
Entity
No entities have been documented within Level 48-ID as of the current writing. Should any exist, it is highly probable that they have perished, buried beneath the volcanic ash.
Outpost, Bases, and Communities
WAS Outpost
If survivors are lucky, they will encounter a large, dark-green emergency tent bearing a Red Cross emblem by the roadside. This is an outpost managed by the local branch of the "Wander and Search" organization. Inside, they provide food and water supplies as well as medical services. They typically establish their outposts in close proximity to the nearest noclip point. The best part? They do not charge a fee for disclosing the location of these noclip points.
Message from the WAS Team Leader, Branch 48-ID:
"Our history? We were as good as dead when we were first deployed here, if it weren't for that door. A door that leads to Level 10-ID. I won't tell you where, unfortunately. That’s our supply line.
Other WAS branches might slap a high price tag on their supplies, especially for noclip coordinates. But I know what it’s like to stare death in the face on this Level. So, after consulting with the rest of the team, we’ve decided to provide that information at no cost.
Unfortunately, we can't do the same for supplies and medical care. We need funding to keep this operation running. But I suppose this is why the organization was founded in the first place: to find survivors and help them.
If this is your first encounter with WAS, I can't guarantee that other branches you meet down the road will be as charitable as we are. Speaking of which, we’re handing out medical masks for free. We stumbled upon a shophouse that turned out to be a drugstore. Ah, but that location is a secret too, unfortunately.
But if you decide to venture deeper into this Level, you’ll need something much stronger than an N95. We sell industrial-grade respirators for that. You wouldn’t be the first to want to explore further.
Word is, further out, the streets start becoming littered with carcasses."

Entrances and Exits
Entrances
- Entering a random door can bring survivors to this level, especially if they are in an indoor-themed level.
- If survivors are in an open area such as Level 8-ID or Level 15-ID and suddenly feel their vision obscured by ash, they will be in this level.
Exits
- Generally, exit access is a random door that leads to another level. It is important to check buildings that have been forced open by other survivors.
- There is a marked narrow alley that can take survivors to Level 27-ID.
- If you encounter a WAS outpost, they will direct survivors to the nearest noclip access.
- Walking further along the streets may lead you to another level.
