Level 300 - "The Tree of Life"

Description

Level 300, known by all as The Tree of Life, is a gargantuan tree extending thousands of kilometers into the sky, housing organisms from all walks of life on its many branches. The biological designation for the tree is sequoiadendron gargantuem, not to be confused with its counterparts sequoiadendron giganteum — Earth's largest species of tree. Evidence suggests that The Tree of Life, as its name would suggest, is the source of almost all, if not all, naturally-occurring plant life in the Backrooms, including plant-like entities.

Due to the sheer size of the level, as well as its steep terrain, much of it has been unexplored; the higher up the tree one ventures, the less documentation can be found, to the point where all knowledge of the top of the tree is completely speculative and rumour-based with no recorded evidence. Nonetheless, what is known about The Tree of Life is that it is instrumental to the existence of all life in the Backrooms as a whole.

The Roots

Starting from the ground up, the roots of Level 300 are the source that feeds all plant life. Each root ranges in size from a few hundred meters to several kilometers in circumference, barreling into the ground too deep to reasonably unearth. The fact that The Tree of Life's rapid photosynthesis allows it to regenerate and the connection of its roots to the soil of each level are reason enough for no one to try, in any case. Anything and everything organic that was not planted by man sprouted by a connection to this level. Digging deep enough into the soil — right down to the layer where it fades into rock — is where the roots have been found, tested and verified to belong to The Tree of Life.

Besides their instrumental part in providing life to the Backrooms, the roots are impossibly thick and durable. To even inflict a scratch on them (for research purposes, of course), pounds of explosives infused with pyroil were needed. Even then, they ended up regenerating almost instantly. This is the case for most parts of the tree, though the further along its branches one travels the less resilient they become.

The roots span an area of several hundred kilometers, their outer perimeter enshrined by dense shrubbery and deep bogs of built-up rain water. Puddles of relatively clean water are sprinkled about intermittently between the roots, alongside standard aquatic life typical for similar regions of Earth such as otters, beavers, alligators, crocodiles, many different types of fish, and even sharks depending on the depth and size of the body of water. Bushes housing waterberries1 can be found sprouting from around these puddles in addition to standard fruit trees and all varieties of earthen vegetation. There is a large outpost surrounding the entire base of the tree operated by longtime inhabitants of the level, welcome to accepting new residents or guiding lost travelers.

All of the level's exits reside amongst the roots of The Tree of Life, available via peculiarly thick bunches of organic matter typical to their respective levels. Almost any level that contains naturally-occurring plant life can be accessed this way.

At the very base of The Tree of Life where it and its roots meet is M.E.G. Base Rhizo, the specifics of which will be divulged later in the page. What is important about this base is that it is the beginning of a wooden spiral staircase ascending most of the way up the tree, wide enough for two people to stand on side-by-side.

The Trunk

As one ascends The Tree of Life, a sturdy oaken staircase built through generations permitting, one will find themself beginning one of the most exhausting treks imaginable: the way to the top. The lower part of Level 300 between its major branches and roots is quite monotonous — if business does not require the ascent, then the risk of falling (although there are guardrails in place) and physical effort is not worth it.

With how deep the ridges in the bark are, however, there are some homes that sparsely populate the area, often equipped with their own fruit farms, though the willingness to share is up to the owners. Otherwise, the only other inhabitants one will face are daybats; despite their intimidating size, they are friendly, and are beneficial companions to keep around considering their habit of catching people who fall.

The Lower Branches

Besides the roots, the lower branches are by far the most populous area of The Tree of Life, housing not only human settlements, but also those belonging to the natives of the level, sequoiadendron sapiens. While the structure of their vocal chords disallows them from verbal communication, they are a very wise, spiritual community that takes pride in their connection to nature. They refuse to communicate on paper (since it is made from trees), but with recent technological advancements, conversation has become possible digitally. Their centuries upon centuries of knowledge have been extremely useful in the documentation and understanding of many different types of native Backrooms plants in recent times.

Among the lower branches of The Tree of Life, near the centre of Bough City2 is where M.E.G. Outpost Thamnos resides. Of all the outposts on the level, it is the only one to possess reliable means to expand the staircase ascending The Tree of Life. Stockpiled materials and M.E.G. entity relations specialists, however, are the only real staple of this outpost, its residents dedicating themselves to better understanding the level and its peoples in hopes that it holds some sort of secret to, as hopeless as it sounds, escape the Backrooms.

While the lower branches do house the highest and most concentrated population of any area of the level apart from the base of the tree, they also sport the least biological diversity; only the tree people, humans, and daybats move about the area, with dewnuts being the only source of food for the latter two, albeit they are sufficiently nutritious. Most would be advised not to ascend any further up the tree, as it is a hopeless journey without the right equipment, supplies, and company.

The Middle Branches

Whilst the middle branches are almost empty when it comes to civilization, the resources found amongst them are abundant, attracting herds of daybats to group around areas where The Tree of Life's sap — a substance that provides a natural, drug-like effect — leaks out. For one reason or another, the sap only emits in one specific area, and only started doing so in recent times as of the creation of this page. Daybats under the influence of this sap can prove to be erratic in behaviour, and consumption of any tree sap is strongly advised against as even the level's natives are uninformed about its specific properties.

At some point as one begins to near the upper branches, the stairway up the tree becomes less safeguarded. Railing becomes infrequent as do rest benches, and fruits ascribed the title of "Eve's Apples" start to grow. One should avoid consumption of these apples at all cost, no matter how compelled one may become. The cut-off point where one will know they have reached the upper branches is where the staircase becomes a ladder of sorts, heading diagonally from branch to branch.

The Upper Branches

From the little that is known about the upper branches, we know that there are two native species in the area in moss bears and blue raspberries. Moss bears are completely harmless according to all reliable knowledge, blue raspberries being the only prey they choose to hunt. Beyond that, rumours detail a conglomerate of groups labeled "the Climbers" inhabiting this part of the level in hopes of reaching the top based on a legend depicting that the fruit of eternal life grows at the top of the tree. If one is to ever attempt to climb this high, befriending a daybat and avoiding these groups if possible is the safest way, as some have alleged that they were nearly pushed to their demise if not for their safeguards. It is assumed that these groups will do anything in their power to acquire the resources necessary to make it to the top.

The Treetop (?)

No man has ever been able to prove that they have ascended all the way to the top. After all, even the ladders up the tree end far before any sight of the top. However, it is fabled that folks have made an effort at rushing up the tree before using extensive climbing equipment, though there is no proof of this as they have never returned. Binocular sightings of angelic, light-emitting figures distantly perusing the highest foliage of the tree have been corroborated, though it is impossible to get a proper look at them based on the distance. These sighting lend credence to the theory that at least something of note resides at the top of The Tree of Life.

Climate & Conditions

Level 300 houses the perfect environment for plantlife to flourish. Temperatures range from 15⁰C to 35⁰C, averaging at 21⁰C on a day-to-day basis. Humidity levels are extremely high, making the air thicker and causing physical exertion to be more laboured as one ascends the tree. Rainfall is frequent, and when it does happen, it happens on an almost violent scale, often causing temporary flash floods amongst the lower areas of the roots, the aftermath of which leads the level's flora to be at its freshest and most diverse. This 'rain' is actually dew produced from the top of the tree, which was determined by the fact that no clouds form in the level's atmosphere. Depending on which part of the tree one is on, one could encounter almost any species of tree, bush, or plant from back home. For example, deserts form on branches that get the least rain, and other biomes form based on the climate and conditions of the branches they inhabit. The sun hardly rests here, with nightfall only lasting a brief four hours before fading out.

Flora, Fauna, & Unique Species

Flora

Eve's Apples are an addictive, dangerous extension of The Tree of Life, growing exclusively near the top of the tree. They are a melon-sized fruit shaped like an apple that is a deep, crimson-red in colour. While the taste and texture, alongside the juiciness are decadent, the adverse effects of the fruit are gruesome and ruthless. Even before having a bite of the fruit, anyone who encounters it will feel a strange compulsion towards it, but will face dire consequences due to its addictive nature, hence its name. No matter how much of this fruit one eats, they will never be satiated and will never feel as though their stomach is being filled — the fruit has a numbing effect on the inside of one's stomach, tragically leading many to eat until their stomach bursts and succumb to internal bleeding. It is a horrible way to go out, so all advice orders avoiding the fruit.

Fauna

Better known as tree people, this sentient species has been around since the beginning of time in the Backrooms. As such, they are wise beyond their many years, many acting as spiritual leaders to the human locals. Their biology is quite simple — they have two arms and two legs, similar in composition to the tree trunks of sequoia trees. Their fingers, toes, and other appendages are more akin to the branches. They vary in size in a similar way that humans do, though they lack variety in their thickness and frame. They do not have digestive and reproductive organs, as is the norm for plants, however they also do not produce seeds. They are conceived simply by emerging from the tree's lower branches; at birth, they could be mistaken for twigs, as they gradually sprout from the branches before gaining sentience.

With their lack of a digestive track, tree people also lack vocal chords as well as any oral or nasal orifice, though they do possess three black, bead-like eyes in a triangular arrangement on their face. They seem to be unable to feel pain due to their lack of nerve endings, and have no way of hearing either, making sight their only conventional sense. They have attempted to explain, however, that they do feel another kind of sensation that relates to other plantlife — a sixth sense of sorts that allows them to communicate with one another, as well as other plants, The Tree of Life included.

Socially, tree people are quite different from humans as could be expected. They do not have childhood or adolescent stages of development as most species do, nor do they have typical family dynamics. Rather, they seem themselves as one joint family, other species of plants being their brothers, sisters, and cousins and The Tree of Life their parent.

Groups & Settlements

M.E.G. Base Rhizo is an instrumental hub for all botanical practices and the cultivation of a large sum of the M.E.G.'s food supplies. Due to the level's pristine conditions, several greenhouses and growth plots have been set up all around The Tree of Life's perimeter, alongside dozens of permanent residences of generational farmers. Several supply chains have been formed to deliver goods from the level to myriad other M.E.G. outposts and bases across the Backrooms, feeding hundreds if not thousands of people. As such, the M.E.G. invests quite a bit in the security of their harvest, boasting quite a bit of manpower in order to ward off other groups that have attempted to tamper with their system, such as Amor Incrementum.

The base is welcoming to newcomers, and is a great place to settle down, especially if one has been "on the run" so to speak for some time.

Entry & Egress

Entry

As previously mentioned, thick patches of shrubbery can appear on any given level with a large plant presence. Entering one of these bushes leads one to emerge from an identical one on Level 300.

Another less common entrance is via the puddles amongst the roots; some people who find themselves drowning on other levels will claw their way up and out of these bodies of water in a fit of desperation, with no way back from where they came from.

Egress

Exiting the level is possible the same way from whence one entered it, making the level quite easy to come across.
