Esteemed and respected workers,

We thank you for your committed work and dedication. We have seen your skill, and we are happy to see a small community of a few workers transform into a proud company. We rejoice in your prosperity, and the B.N.T.G. is glad to partake in it.

However, it would seem that unfortunately, the world does not.

With a heavy heart, we regret to announce that for the last few months, the company has been under the profit margin. For the level of productivity and work which has been put into such a great company, the world has not responded.

In accordance with the Protocols of Asset 155, the B.N.T.G. reserves the right to terminate the protocols.

As of September 13th, 2024, the Protocols of Asset 155 have been terminated.

Managerial staff and high-ranking personnel are now ordered to leave the premises of Asset 155 and return to Trader's Keep immediately.

All B.N.T.G. private assets must be returned immediately. In exchange, severance packages will be provided.

There is no opening to renegotiate the termination at this time.

It was just ten sentences. Ten sentences that ended the livelihoods of more than seventy.

Holding the mass-printed letter in my hand, I quickly shoved it aside. From the hallway that I was sat in, I could already see others hauling crates of stuff here, moving over mining equipment there, and emptying out offices. It had only been a few hours since the notice was posted, but already quick hands went to work; an order was an order.

It had been three years since I had joined the Quartz Company, or "Asset 155". The details are not so important; I'm just another blurred face that's unrecognizable.

Unwillingly unrecognizable.

That's part of the reason why I joined the company in the first place. It's why many of us did, actually. It's hard to say you're "unique" when you're in the bustling crowds of the city. Here in the mines, it's quiet— peaceful, even. Everything feels smaller. Your actions feel bigger.

I reckon that's why a small group emerged here to begin with. Starting something— even if it's small— is meaningful. Being able to say that you went your own path feels like one of the only ways to have control over your life in the Backrooms. Even if that means mining useless quartz.

Useless, boring, quartz. It wasn't until the B.N.T.G. came in 7 months ago that we actually started mining the stuff. Reflecting on it now, it was the allure that the B.N.T.G. brought that motivated us to start mining it in the first place. Those promises of fame and glory were everything that so many of us desired. Everyone needs proof that they exist, and for us it became the quartz. Quartz was our pride, our way of life. But now? I don't want to look at a shard of quartz again.

"Hey. We need your help disassembling a ramp. C'mon."

And like that, I was back on the clock.

By the 20th, everything was cleared out. The hallways of the level— once full of steel ramps and mining gear— were now barren. Like an empty house with no furniture, it just didn't look right.

This is the reward of hard work; not all dreams come true. For every success story you hear, there are a thousand failures which you do not.

"Does this mean we're unemployed?" An old friend of mine greeted me.

"I think maybe we were always unemployed." I responded in kind.

"Do you… have any regrets?" I asked.

"A few. But one thing I never regretted was joining this company. Like, it certainly beats having to pay landlords egregious sums for a cramped apartment. And anyway, I've met so many amazing people here— you included."

"What do you think is going to happen to us now?"

"Well, it's clear that the mining-bizz is over, which means we're going to go back to just being a regular, simple old community. Still, it was fun while it lasted, wasn't it? Personally, I can't wait for what's next."

But what is next?

More news would come on the 23rd. Another mass-printed letter, brought to us this time by M.E.G. diplomats passing through from Level 11.

We have recently been made aware of a termination of contract between your company and the B.N.T.G. Our sincerest condolences.

Having seen your productivity, work ethic, and loyalty, it is imperative that such potential not go to waste. We are now offering your company the status as an official M.E.G. outpost in Level 155. This partnership will not be primarily financially motivated, but will be utilized as a means to expand the M.E.G. and provide assistance to wanderers in Level 155. We are ready to welcome everyone within your company as proper M.E.G. members, and we are ready to help you all find purpose and prosperity.

"…Negotiated… more negotiation?… they don't mean…" I overheard some passing conversation as I read the letter in a common room.

"…so basically they're here to pick up after…"

"…well, maybe, I think they're just trying to…"

"…I doubt they will…"

There was no more machinery to drown out the quiet. In its absence, frantic, panicked, aimless conversation was all we had to fill it.

"I think this is the M.E.G.'s way of trying to take us in and make us find work outside of this level."

So, it looks like duty has called us once again. From another group, another call.

"Are you going to join the M.E.G.?" an old friend of mine had approached me again.

"I don't know. I don't know if I'm ready to go back to life surrounded by concrete… and filth."

"Yeah, I get that. In any case, I don't think we even know who has the authority to represent us." my old friend took a seat by a wall, ushering me to sit down as well.

"You wanna play cards?" I said, out of words.

"It's funny. I'm sure they're playing cards in the large bases and outposts as well, but… everything feels different here." my old friend continued to talk. I simply listened.

"I remember when I first stumbled into the mines. I was absent-mindedly scavenging through the city when, all of a sudden, I saw this bright, pristine door. Now, survival instincts— and common sense— tells us not to open mysterious, out-of-place doors in the Backrooms.

"Maybe I was hoping I would discover some crazy-new level, or maybe I was just hoping that I could take control of my life but, something about that door called to me.

"Thankfully, what I had found was completely useless and perfectly well-known. But when I first entered the level, seeing the huge sky of quartz above, and the gargantuan steps before me, I was amazed."

"Next thing I know, I find some people, we share a couple jokes, share a bit of food, and now all of a sudden, I'm a miner and I left behind my apartment in Level 11.

"And since that day, I haven't thought about the future as much as I have now."

There's a tradition that we follow here in the mines. Every new member must engrave their name on a wall in our main common room. Though there are only about seventy of us left now, there are exactly ninety-three names scattered along the walls. I was thoroughly anticipating that droves of us would leave seeking the M.E.G., and that the leadership of our company would become a M.E.G. outpost.

But nobody moved. Seventy-something is where that number will stay. No one has since given a proper response to the M.E.G. I doubt anyone ever will, and I doubt anyone ever could.

I lay back on the cold, hard ground in one of our dormitories. The sky above a solid slab of white gold, dotted with stars where I once worked, side by side with people who I can only call…
