Description

The phenomenon of "Level Disappearance" refers to "the disappearance of access to a level," creating the impression that the level itself has vanished. The term also refers to "a period when attempts to access a level become impossible." Access to the destination level will suddenly disappear, either temporarily or permanently. This may involve only one known access point vanishing, or the disappearance of all known routes. It is unknown what causes this phenomenon to occur, and there are no signs predicting its arrival. The physical appearance of the disappeared access point also will not change, so survivors will not realize that the access point can no longer be used. Access points consisting of a "noclip zone on a physical object" will cease to possess that noclip property; access points that are "other levels behind doors" will become new rooms or corridors within the survivor's current level, or the door will not open at all; while "teleportation" access points will simply fail to move the traveler.

It is theorized that a level experiencing this phenomenon is "detached" or has been completely "erased," so survivors cannot return to it—there is no evidence to prove this theory. For a level that can no longer be accessed, it is unknown what happens to those left behind in that level, because attempts to contact them will fail—even the Wi-Fi connection linked to that level will be cut off. Due to its sporadic yet notable frequency, this phenomenon is quite well-known and has become part of the culture of Backrooms survivors. This is because it alters the routes between levels, affecting mapping, emergency evacuation routes, and logistics routes between advanced survivor communities.

This phenomenon has shaped the Backrooms pathways survivors currently navigate. Even the known access points today are considered the "most stable," though they remain susceptible to future disappearance. Closed access points are typically marked by various means, including labeling the entry point; however, it is advisable to re-examine all labeled entries to verify whether the closure is genuine. In some cases, these labels are deliberately placed by someone to trick other survivors into not entering access points that are still active for unknown reasons.

An image was uploaded to the Backrooms information sharing forum by a BackTavern.net forum user named @seranimo. This image shows what appears to be a "separation" of two previously connected levels. This image became the center of attention because the process of this phenomenon finally became documented after being a mystery for so long.

Do's and Don'ts

Do's

Be aware that the onset of this phenomenon is instantaneous and completely unannounced, and the disappeared access point will show no visible change in appearance. It is possible that your intended destination has vanished, or that your current level is the one that has become isolated. It is recommended to attempt the following two actions first:

  • Try contacting other survivors, whether those who also live within same level as you or inhabitants of other known levels.
  • Try navigating to other level access points. It is possible that you can still reach other levels.

If both preceding actions yield the result that you are stranded and your level is isolated from all others, then prioritize survival, such as gathering resources and making long-term plans. Maintain the hope that this phenomenon is only temporary. Since disconnected access points bear no visible changes, survivors are strongly advised to disseminate information regarding these access changes for the benefit of the community, as this could assist them in an emergency.

Don'ts

  • Spreading panic to other survivors.
  • Not spreading information about the disappearance of access to another level.
  • If you find a very dark room behind an access point (whether a door or a noclip point), stop immediately and turn back because you may accidentally enter the Void. This location may appear because the Level Disappearance phenomenon has just occurred at the access point you are heading to.
