Instance of flora associated with the Whispers phenomenon.
Description
Whispers refers to a rare phenomenon characterized by temporary loss of hearing concerning all external stimuli, accompanied by auditory manifestations. It affects wanderers who have spent an extended period of time within the immediate perimeter of certain naturally occurring flora within the Backrooms. The duration of the phenomenon is typically limited to a few minutes, after which manifestations subside, and hearing is restored.
Confirmed instances have been verified with audio recordings to rule out alternate (psychological) causes.
Addendum
Below are a series of compiled logs detailing confirmed incidents of Whispers.
Flora Type: Salix matsudana (pekin willow)
Duration: 78 seconds
Contents:
Wind rushing. Footsteps on asphalt.
"The road—"
Indiscernible.
"The road back home has some branches growing."
"Kinda look like long, spindly fingers in the night. I try not to look when I'm walking home."
"I know what you're going to say. Ah…"
There is a soft exhale.
"No, it's okay, really. I'm fine. Really."
The scrapping of tin on asphalt, the sound of wind in the trees.
The voice laughs a little."There goes a can."
Steady footfall on pavement continues uninterrupted for some time. Branches creak like garden gates of some location lost to time. Buster of traffic in the distance.
A distant thunderclap crashes down in the dark.
"Sounds like a rainstorm to me. I think it's gonna be a long time before I get any sleep tonight."
Indiscernible.
"You know, I went to the park this morning."
"Wild, huh?" The speaker huffs.
"So I got to the tree and hung up the paper you showed me. Basically spilled everything I put here."
"I don't think I'm superstitious… but who knows?"
Footsteps halt.
"Is it too much to hope?"
Flora Type: Myosotis scorpioides (scorpion grass)
Duration: 12 seconds
Contents:
"The painting is finished. I put it up on the wall."
A soft thud.
"In your room, by the way. I'd hoped you wouldn't mind."
"It's been looking empty lately, anyways."
Flora Type: Prunus persica (peach blossom)
Duration: 51 seconds
Contents:
The rustle of wind through foliage and distant chirping.
A rapid succession of clattering, followed by an abrupt cut.
Silence.
"I'm up early again. I mean, I stayed up late. God."
"I promised that last time was the last time."
"Woke up in time for Nate the other day. He said a lot, but his voice was practically dripping with disappointment our entire session."
"Like 'oh, I understand, I'm trying to be helpful here but do you understand'—""Like, shut it. You…you are a bunch of things I would never say to your face."
The voice barks out a harsh laugh.
"Here, look."
Sound returns like a crashing tide. The wind howled, accompanied by the irregular clinking of glass.
"I mean, you can't see but the trees in the garden are pink! After so long that it's completely slipped my mind."
"I was hella excited. And they're here."
"And you…"
Howling subsides. Clinking settles to give way to ever-persistent birdsong.
The voice yawns.
"The flowerings in spring are so short-lived. Maybe next year then."
Flora Type: Osmanthus fragrans (sweet osmanthus)
Duration: 19 seconds
Contents:
A small sigh.
"And so the months go."
A procession of notes strummed in C major (C5, C5, A4, G4, A4, C5, C5).
"There's a poem I used to be fond of. Of how no matter how far, we'll always be looking up at the same moon. I don't know, just something I liked at the time."
"It's awfully sappy of me, I know. Hey, didn't you used to love Mid-Autumn Festival?"
Flora Type: Phalaenopsis amabilis (moon orchid)
Duration: 29 seconds
Contents:
A dialtone.
"…Several rainstorms lately, but the sky clears up so soon."
"Hey, that's what my stupid messages are for, huh?"
"Y'know, just in case you decide to pop back onto the face of the earth someday?"
"If you could-"
"If they could find you-"
"God, I don't know. Drop me a line maybe? I'd be grateful."
There is a sound a little like laughter.
"The seeds you planted — look, your seeds are blooming."
The wind dies down.
"When are you coming home?"
