Spec stands anxiously outside an unassuming door in the middle of an apartment complex. Just over twenty minutes ago, he'd reached out to Alexis, hoping for little more than conversation. Now here he was: in front of his door.
"How did I even get here?" Spec wonders. "Weird to think that none of this would have happened if not for a food run gone wrong…"
He steps towards the door, but pauses.
"Is this really a good idea? After everything we just went through?"
"…"
"Why wouldn't it be?"
Spec's hand barely even makes contact with the door before it's pulled open.
"I was wondering when you were going to get the nerve." A familiar voice says dryly.
"Shut up Alexis. Wait, were you watching me the WHOLE TIME? Creep…"
"NONONO- I literally just checked the peephole a minute ago and saw you standing there. I was ju—"
Spec is already halfway into the apartment, clearly no longer paying attention.
"Whoa… nice place. It's bigger on the inside…"
Alexis facepalms.
"Can you make it like… I don't know, FIFTEEN MINUTES without making a pop culture reference? What the fuck are you, an MCU character?"
Alexis immediately notices his slip-up, but it's already too late.
"Hypocrite. You just can't help yourself either." Spec shoots back, glaring back at him with narrowed eyes. "Of all the negative personality traits you could have given me shit for, you somehow managed to choose the ONE incorrect one. Well done, I don't even think I could have that level of gross incompetence."
Spec corners his companion, pushing Alexis against the wall as he leans up against him.
"So what do you wanna doooooooooo…" Spec asks with a light tone.
"Depends. Do you feel like going out?" Alexis replies, rolling his eyes as he pushes Spec back onto the couch.
"Not really. I'm lazy, it's late, and I'm not hungry."
"So… now what?"
"I don't know, got any good movies lying around? I see you have a DVD player."
"Shit. How long have I been asleep— what time is it?"
Spec blinks the last few traces of sleep out from his eyes, looking around the pitch-black apartment. The glow of the TV is the only light source in the room, casting an eerie blue glow over the living room and kitchen space.
Spec shifts on the couch, untangling himself from Alexis as he sits up straight.
"I'm thirsty— where does this fucker keep his glasses?"
Spec yawns as he walks over to the kitchen, lazily searching through the cupboard.
"Jesus Christ it's fucking messy in here— I'm going to beat his ass for that in the morning… ah, here we go—"
Spec grabs at a glass, but instead of being able to pick it up, it seems stuck to the base of the cupboard.
"That's odd…"
He pulls harder, feeling the glass click as if being locked into place. Behind him, the sound of something unlocking fills his ears. He turns around to see the door to a hidden cabinet slowly swinging open.
"What the fuck…"
Spec kneels down in front of the secret compartment, using the flashlight in his palm to illuminate the dark space. It seems to be empty— until he notices a small black box pushed up against the back.
Spec looks over his shoulder to the couch. "He's still asleep…"
He reaches in, grabs the box, and shuts the cabinet. It's small and made of cardboard— nothing too imposing.
"Should I really…? No, that'd be an invasion of privacy."
"…"
"God damn it, I'm this far already."
Spec sets the box down on the counter, removing the lid and peering inside.

"Why did you have to go and wake up now of all times, Spec?"
Spec flinches, dropping the box— the contents spilling on the floor.
"We had such a good thing going…" Alexis says with a groan, slowly approaching him.
"You… the…" Spec stammers. He tries in vain to form a sentence, but it's no use. For once in his life, he's been rendered speechless.
"Come now, Spec. Let's not do anything stupid, yeah?" Alexis replies in a soft tone, a pained expression on his face.
"You sick fuck…" Spec replies through gritted teeth. It was as if a switch were flipped in his head, snapping him out of his trance.
"Listen, I know this looks bad, but if you just let me ex—"
"EXPLAIN FUCKING WHAT, ALEXIS? IF THAT EVEN IS YOUR REAL NAME… WHAT IS THERE TO EXPLAIN?" Spec clenches his fists, taking a deep breath. "I'm going to ask you just one question, Alexis. And my god, you better give the best motherFUCKING response anyone's ever heard."
"Ok. Please, just calm down…" Alexis replies quietly, holding up his hands in surrender.
Spec slams his right fist down onto the granite countertop, shattering it like cheap glass. Alexis winces at the sound.
"You don't get to tell me to 'calm down,' you slimy fucking prick. Shut the hell up and answer my question."
Spec takes a deep breath, pushing his hair back and letting it fall back down. He grits his teeth, doing his best to conduct himself in a level-headed manner.
"Any of it. Our time in 201. Was any of it real?"
Alexis puts his head down in silence.
"That's what I fucking thought." Spec kicks a chair over as he walks past Alexis into the living room, pulling at his hair.
"Fucking hell… I actually thought— ha, actually BELIEVED that something was going my way for ONCE. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, that would be too idyllic for a place like this, wouldn't it? God fucking damn it. God fucking DAMN it—"
Spec pulls back his arm to punch the wall, but stops himself.
"No. That won't change anything."
He continues pacing around in a circle, monologuing out loud while Alexis sits in silence at the kitchen table, head in his hands.
"This is what I get for finally fucking TRUSTING someone. I knew I was getting soft. So much for listening to Blanche's advice about 'bEiNg MoRe OpEn' to people… she's so…"
"Spec. Spec. CALM THE FUCK DOWN. Lashing out at people who have nothing to do with this won't he-> -"
"I DON'T WANT TO FUCKING HEAR IT, BRAIN. IT'S YOUR FAULT I'M IN THIS MESS."
"…I guess that does make it MY fault anyway."
"She's so FUCKING OBLIVIOUS. ALL OF THEM ARE. ALL THIS DOES IS JUST PROVE ME FUCKING RIGHT."
Spec whirls around towards Alexis.
"…THAT TRUSTING PEOPLE JUST GETS YOU INTO DEEPER SHIT."
"Since you saved me from tuning out."
Spec goes rigid. "What the fuck did you just say?"
Alexis stands up, sighing in between shaky breaths.
"How much of it was real? Since you saved me from tuning out. When you dropped me and woke me up."
Spec stares at him incredulously.
"Everything I had known about you until that point had been proven more or less right. That you were nothing more than another name in the G.P.D.'s database— some dickwad with power they don't deserve. An insolent, egomaniacal brat with something to prove."
"If you're trying to sweeten me up, you're doing a really great job" Spec replies, words dripping with venom.
"I'm not done! After we talked that night, you started doing everything in your power to just try and make things right— or at least amicable. Hell, you saved my fucking life. The 'Spec' that I'd heard about? It would have been impossible for someone like that. I realized I was making a heinous fucking mistake. Every single day that passed after that I spent milling over what I was actually even DOING there anymore— you weren't some condescending nepo-baby with radical beliefs… you were just some fucking twink in over his head. A dumbass trying to do right by the world. And what was I doing to reward you for it? Fucking manipulating you."
Alexis sighs.
"You don't have to believe me, but I'll tell you this. Yes, I made up that 1970s flower-child rock and roll 'nerd' persona to get in your head. But outside of that, everything was just… me. Fuck, I had to run with it at that point, yknow?"
Spec locks eyes with Alexis
"How do I know you're not just lying to my face again?"
Alexis looks at the floor. "You don't. I can't really prove it, can I?"
Spec returns to pacing in circles around the room, slowly dragging his hands down his face.
"So why continue hiding what you were doing?"
"Because… I didn't want this to happen. I WAS STARTING TO LIKE WHAT WE HAD, SPEC. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU THINK I FEEL RIGHT NOW?"
"WHAT THE FUCK *DID* WE HAVE, ALEXIS? ALL WE DID WAS AWKWARDLY DANCE AROUND THE SUBJECT FOR A FEW MONTHS. WE CERTAINLY WEREN'T FUCKING PARTNERS, THAT'S FOR SURE."
"THEN WHY CAN'T WE JUST GO BACK TO BEING FRIENDS? PEOPLE CAN CHANGE, SPEC. YES, I MESSED UP ABOUT AS MUCH AS SOMEONE CAN— BUT I TOLD YOU— I CHANGED. WHY CAN'T WE JUST GO BACK TO HOW IT WAS?"
"BECAUSE WE DID A LOT MORE THAN WHAT FRIENDS DO, ALEXIS. THAT COMPLICATES THINGS. IT ISN'T THAT SIMPLE ANYMORE!"
Spec puts his fingers up to his temples, taking a deep breath.
"I trusted you. I poured my fucking secrets into your life. I FELT FUCKING SAFE AROUND YOU. I trusted you enough to fucking SLEEP WITH YOU. You broke that trust down to the most fundamental level, and now you're just asking me to GIVE IT BACK? No. FUCK no. Trust needs to be earned, and I honestly don't even know if you CAN earn it back at this point. As far as I know, you could be plotting to put me out right now. How am I supposed to just DEAL with that?"
Alexis sighs. "Listen. I'll call the mission office. If I just explain it to them, they'll understand. The U.E.C. is scared of you— if I tell them there's nothing to be afraid of, they'll LISTEN. Information can be updated, Spec. We're no different from the M.E.G. We're just more focused on protecting than exploring. I KNOW that's something you sympathize with."
"Do you even believe the heinous bullshit you're spouting right now?" Spec asks, giving Alexis a genuinely dumbfounded look. "Do you SERIOUSLY think that the U.E.C. has ANYONE'S best interests in mind?"
"YES, SPEC. THEY SAVED MY FUCKING LIFE."
"…"
"Listen. When I had first fallen here— I was alone. Scared shitless. I wandered those concrete halls in solitude for DAYS until I found a small fortress made from couch cushions and upturned bed frames."
Alexis takes a deep breath.
"The people there— they welcomed me. Brought me in. Fed me. They didn't ask a fucking THING in return."
Alexis grits his teeth.
"They were good people. A goddamn rarity in this hellhole. Which just makes the following part all the more cliche, doesn't it? A hound. Big one. It crashed through the walls in the middle of the night— tore everyone to shreds one by one. And all I could do was fucking watch."
"…"
"I stood there motionless as everyone was ripped apart. My legs wouldn't move. I just… froze."
Alexis puts his head up against the wall.
"And that's when he came. Fashionably late as fucking always. Caring more about his stupid dramatic entrance than actually saving lives."
Spec finally speaks up. "When who came?" He asks in a hoarse voice.
"Who the hell do you think? For someone so smart, you're a real idiot. The Red Knight. He cleaved that beast in half with a single slice, before sending me to 11. Arrogant piece of shit. I know even you can attest to THAT part, Spec."
Alexis nods towards Spec's prosthetic.
"For someone omnipresent, he sure loves arriving at the last possible second. How many people have fucking died out there due to that flashy bastard's egomaniacal need to ALWAYS have a heroic entrance?"
"Yeah, but the Knight still SAVES people, Alexis. He still does good."
"And so do we. Do you know how many Hounds we put down in a week? How many Dullers? Partygoers? I'll give you a hint: It's a lot fucking more than HE could ever do. And unlike him, we do it for the GOOD of humanity— not because we want to look cool in front of the cameras."
Spec walks over to Alexis, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Listen. I don't know how to tell you this, Alexis— but you're in WAY over your head. Please. Just… fuck. Whatever happens between you and me, just leave that cesspool behind."
Alexis sighs. "I… I can't. I owe too much to them. They gave me something to live for after that attack… a community to be a part of. I can't just take that for granted and leave it all behind."
Spec sighs, pulling away. "I figured as much. This conversation is pointless. I shouldn't even be here. I'm livid right now— and I don't want to keep playing with fire. Goodbye, Alexis. Go fuck yourself."
"Spec, wait—" Alexis starts, reaching out his hand."
"Why do I constantly fumble these things? Why can't I just put my emotions into words like a normal human being?"
"I can't lose him now. Not after all this. I was so close… I was almost FUCKING HAPPY. God forbid."
"Fuck it."
As thoughts whirl around in Alexis's head like a thunderstorm, he can't stop himself from moving. He reaches out, grabbing Spec by the wrist.
"What the hell are you—"
Alexis spins Spec around, pinning him against the wall and kissing him.
"Holyshitholyshitholyshit"
"What the fuck is Alexis doing? Why can't I move? What is—"
Alexis pulls back, loosening his grip on Spec's wrist.
The two make eye contact— staring each other down as the stress threatens to crack each of them like an egg.
"I should leave. This isn't healthy. I LITERALLY FUCKING HATE HIM."
"I…"
"Well?" Alexis asks shakily.
Spec sighs, pulling away and walking deeper into Alexis's apartment.
"Just get in the fucking bedroom already."
