Description
Level 245 is an aquatic level, consisting of an endless ocean filled with rocky islands and wrecked and derelict vessels. Despite the harsh conditions, an organized society has managed to emerge and represents the best hope of survival and escape for wanderers who accidentally find themselves in the level. The most common means of entry to Level 245 is by being caught in a storm in an aquatic level, although some wanderers have described entering the level through other means. The M.E.G. discovered Level 245 in 2017, when a research vessel was caught in a storm and entered Level 245. Assistance was provided by the residents of the level, and the vessel was able to safely leave.
M.E.G. SURVIVAL GUIDE
In the event that you find yourself in Level 245, sail towards a lighthouse if one is visible. These lighthouses have been built by the inhabitants of the Level to provide aid to wanderers in distress. If a lighthouse is not visible, begin broadcasting a distress signal. Most of the central region of the level is within the range of a network of radio towers built by the inhabitants beginning in the mid-1970s, and the operators of these towers will provide support and directions to lost wanderers.
If you can't see a lighthouse or broadcast a distress signal, do not despair. Survival is possible. The waters of the level are filled with a variety of fish, including many edible species. The frequent rain provides a good source of drinking water. If your vessel is at risk of becoming unseaworthy, land on one of the rocky islands found throughout the level and make repairs using the flotsam that washes ashore.
Be aware that access to the BackNet is limited within Level 245. Within most of the level, your devices will only be able to access a static version of the BackNet as it was prior to you entering Level 245. With the assistance of the Backrooms Remodeling Company, functional wi-fi networks exist within the larger settlements in Level 245, allowing regular access and use of the Backnet.
The Thalassic League
The Thalassic League is an organization made up of the various settlements that exist within Level 245. They are responsible for the construction and maintenance of the lighthouses and radio towers that exist throughout the level and operate rescue vessels to assist distressed wanderers. The League maintains a good relationship with the M.E.G., and an embassy has been built within Port Respite, the largest settlement on the level.
Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the Thalassic League is the creation of usable and stable entrances and exits from Level 245. Using pieces of salvaged technology created by the Leaders1, the League was able to expand and stabilize microscopic thresholds to the point that they could be used to enter and exit the level. The first of these was opened in 2002. The League continues to use the technology to stabilize additional thresholds. This technology is of great interest to the M.E.G., and a joint project involving both the M.E.G. and the League to reverse engineer and manufacture additional threshold stabilizers is currently ongoing.
Wanderers rescued by the Thalassic League can choose either to be provided with assistance leaving the level or to join a League settlement. While conditions in Level 245 are unpleasant, many wanderers choose to remain thanks to the lack of hostile entities and good quality of life within the settlements.
Outposts
As well as the various settlements that are part of the Thalassic League, several outposts have been constructed in Level 245 by outside groups following its discovery by the M.E.G. The most notable of these are:
M.E.G. Port Respite Diplomatic Outpost
Established in 2018 to provide support for M.E.G. citizens in Level 245 and to promote collaboration between the M.E.G. and the Thalassic League, the Port Respite Diplomatic Outpost is a small outpost home to a few staff and some accommodation for travelers.
B.N.T.G. Salvage Reclamation Facility
A large facility constructed by the B.N.T.G. with the purpose of converting the derelict ships and flotsam of Level 245 into usable resources. While a risky place to work, wanderers employed in the faculty are compensated well. A marketplace where wanderers can trade salvage for a variety of goods has emerged within the warehouse section of the facility.
U.E.C. Outpost Fort Poseidon
Constructed in 2020, Fort Poseidon is the U.E.C.'s only known outpost in Level 245. Witnesses report that U.E.C. vessels regularly arrive at and depart from Fort Poseidon. It is believed the U.E.C. established Fort Poseidon in order to conduct their own salvaging operations within the level. Wanderers are advised to avoid Fort Poseidon as vessels which attempt to approach will be ordered to retreat and fired upon if they do not comply.
Entrances and Exits
Level 245 can be entered by traveling into a storm in any aquatic level. This is inadvisable as an intentional method of entry, as these storms appear to be random and can cause significant harm to any vessel entering them.
Wanderers can also arrive in Level 245 directly from the Frontrooms, usually as a result of the vessel they're on noclipping while at sea.
It can be safely entered or exited through one of the five stable thresholds listed below:
- TH-023: Connects to Level 48
- TH-036: Connects to Level 422
- TH-042: Connects to Level 323
- TH-057: Connects to Level 230
- TH-075: Connects to Level 29
